High School junior Walter Avesteffer hit a buzzer beater to end the half during the Special Olympics Celebrity Game and celebrated with a perfect front flip.
“He will do that every now and then when he hits a big shot like that,” said Jeremy Zeiler, basketball coach and teacher.
Walter, a guard, and his 10 teammates on the Bulldogs Special Olympics basketball team earned the State Champion title in Division 4 March 19 at Calvin College. Some 530 athletes and 170 coaches chaperones participate in the state basketball finals each year.
“It was a really great weekend for all the kids,” Zeiler said.
Walter’s flip was featured on the national sports program, Fox Sports, and tweeted by Detroit Pistons player Andre Drummond.
The team was given the opportunity to play in the celebrity game recently at Calvin College for the Special Olympics Opening Ceremony, which featured community celebrities including Drew Neitzel and a handful of news personalities.
The Byron Center High School Special Olympics basketball team qualified for state finals by winning their division in the district tournament at Caledonia.
