Rockford — Beyond the Rock, Rockford High School’s broadcasting network, was a big winner at the Michigan Student Broadcast Awards, once again earning the High School Visual Station of the Year award.
This is the 10th consecutive year BTR has received the top visual station accolade, which is its 16th overall, said video production teacher Kris DeYoung.
BTR also took home first-place awards in the current events, documentary, editorial, hard news, news feature, newscast, public service announcement, sports feature, sports public service announcement, sportscast and scripted talk show categories, as well as several runner-up honors.
DeYoung said the accolades are well-earned.
“What impressed me the most was how (the students) came together as a team, and worked together to find success,” he said. “They told some meaningful stories, and created professional level content. It was a complete joy to watch them be rewarded for all their hard work; they deserved every award they accepted.”
The BTR team was led by Executive Producer Trina Varano, a senior, who was also part of a team recently honored with a National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences award in early February. Trina said the MAB awards mean the world to the team.
“We created inspiring and beautiful stories that share powerful meanings, and seeing them get recognition at such a high level is something that I will forever cherish and take pride in,” she said.
