First-year teacher wants students to know ‘You can have fun while learning’

Editor’s note: Study Hall from School News Network highlights the students, teachers and others making education magic happen every day in classrooms across Kent County and beyond. We dive into the challenges and changes of K-12 education, opening a window into our public schools to provide a glimpse of the little miracles of learning that happen there. Featuring a rotating cast of guests from all 20 school districts in Kent ISD, Study Hall introduces you to amazing students, dynamite teachers and brainy education experts.

Kent City — Marla Anderson is just beginning her teaching career this fall as a first-grade teacher at Kent City Elementary School. A Kent City native, she is excited to enter a profession badly in need of new teachers, but that in recent years has seen a modest uptick in teacher-education program enrollment. Along with her mentor, veteran kindergarten teacher Angela Sabin, Marla talks about the challenges and rewards of teaching, preparing her lessons and getting her classroom ready for the kids — including a brand-new coat of paint.
