Kelloggsville — “Sometimes things don’t go the way you plan,” said 54th Street Academy tenth-grader Kyle Fullgham as he considered why the horse he was working with would not step on an egg.
The exercise was part of a therapy program run by Equine Assisted Development, which uses horses to help people connect with their emotions through empowerment coaching and experiential learning.
When the district was first introduced to the program in 2022, counselor Malissie Henry said she knew she wanted to get her 54th Street Academy students involved.
“Through horse therapy, students gain confidence and the ability to work through anxiety, depression and lack of empathy, while also being encouraged to use their critical thinking and problem-solving skills,” she said. “Overall, this program is designed to meet students where they are, and this is exactly what our students need.”
Our videographer, Brett Atwood, captured the connections between students and horses.
