Voters asked to renew non-homestead millage

Godfrey-Lee — Godfrey-Lee voters are asked to renew by Nov. 5 the district’s non-homestead, 18-mill operating levy.

Approval would allow the district to receive for 10 years the full revenue per-pupil foundation allowance, which equates to more than $1.1 million each year and represents 3% of the annual general fund budget.

“This millage differs from a bond in that it has no tax impact on primary residences, so Godfrey-Lee homeowners are not subject to this tax,” Superintendent Arnetta Thompson said.

“We are required by the state to levy a local property tax of 18 mills on non-homestead property — industrial, commercial, business, rental and second homes — for the district to receive its full per-pupil funding from the state of Michigan.”

Voters approved a similar 10-year non-homestead operating tax levy renewal in 2014.

Thompson noted that although the millage is not borne by primary homeowners, all registered voters who live in the Godfrey-Lee Public Schools boundaries can vote.

“This funding will give us the opportunity to receive full funding to meet the needs of our students,” she said.
