Kentwood — “This is my school. This is my second house … This school is a miracle.”
Those are the words of Gabriel, an East Kentwood High School junior featured in a new video series created by Kentwood Public Schools and Aves Films. Gabriel, from Mexico, is the first student featured.
The series, called “Through the Eyes of Our Students,” aims to share the stories of individual students who attend Kentwood Public Schools. The district is the most diverse in Michigan.
Students featured, like Gabriel, often will represent a larger group of students in the district.
Superintendent Kevin Polston said the video series fits into the district’s mission.
“KPS has a longstanding value of being student-centered in all we do,” he said. “It is reflected in our student vision statements of our strategic plan. Student voice rooted in their unique experiences in our schools and community are essential to the success of KPS.”
Considering student viewpoints is essential, he said.
“Students are our key stakeholders, and in order to best serve them, we first must understand them. There is no better way than to see the world as they see it, through the prism of their perspectives to best design plans for success,” Polston said.
School News Network will share future videos in the series as well.
