Community-school worker: Immigrant students, families apprehensive about Trump deportation plans

Editor’s note: “Study Hall” from School News Network highlights the students, teachers and others making education magic happen every day in classrooms across Kent County and beyond.

All districts — In Kentwood Public Schools, as in many other Kent County districts, students from immigrant families make up a substantial portion of their enrollment. Given President-elect Trump’s campaign pledge for a massive deportation of undocumented immigrants, what impact might his plans have on immigrant students and their families? Brianna Vasquez de Pereira, a Kent School Services Network coordinator at Meadowlawn Elementary School, talks about the fears of the families she works with and what she’s doing to support them.
