Forest Hills — Forest Hills Public Schools will be expanding its offerings to include a junior kindergarten program beginning with the 2025-2026 school year.

Parents of children turning 5 on or before Dec. 1, 2025, will have the opportunity to learn more about the program at a Jan. 22 presentation and Q&A session, starting at 6 p.m. at the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center, 600 Forest Hills Ave. SE.

Children who turn 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2025, may enroll in kindergarten, according to the Michigan Department of Education, and parents of students turning 5 between Sept. 2 – Dec. 1 may seek early enrollment.

Forest Hills’ new junior kindergarten program will be open to students turning 5 between July 1- Dec. 1, 2025. It will be a full-day, Monday through Friday program, with anticipated locations being Ada, Collins and Knapp Forest elementary schools in 2025-26.

According to information from the district, the junior kindergarten program is designed to give students an extra year of academic growth before entering into kindergarten. A screener will work with families to help determine if they should consider junior kindergarten for their child.

Enrollment for both junior kindergarten and kindergarten will begin in February or March.
