Education Everywhere — Young students can explore space science during two days of STEAM programming that also honors a Grand Rapids hero.
School groups of kindergarten through fourth-graders are invited on Feb. 14 to the Grand Rapids Public Museum for Roger That!, a two-day celebration of the life of Roger B. Chaffee, a NASA astronaut in the Apollo program and Grand Rapids native.
Kids will be able to take part in “Creative Space with Rover and Ray of Our Show Today,” a program of WGVU. They’ll also have the chance to win prizes for taking part in astronaut training missions at stations around the museum, and enjoy a show in the Chaffee Planetarium.
Roger That! is in its ninth year and includes events for everyone on Feb. 15, including a presentation from current astronaut John Herrington.
Roger B. Chaffee was a naval officer and aviator aeronautical engineer who joined NASA’s Apollo program. He died in the Apollo 1 tragedy on Jan. 27, 1967, during a launch pad test of the Apollo/Saturn space vehicle being prepared for the first piloted flight. Lt. Col. Virgil Grissom and Lt. Col. Edward H. White also died in the accident.
