District seeks feedback on communication practices

Grand Rapids — Grand Rapids Public Schools is turning to students, parents and the community at large for feedback on district communication practices.

The district has contracted with the National School Public Relations Association for a communications audit, which includes a 15-minute anonymous survey that’s available through Feb. 23 on the district’s website.

“We’ve heard feedback from families and staff that there are some areas that we could improve in our communications, so we looked at how we could do a communications audit,” said Luke Stier, GRPS director of communications. “NSPRA (offers) what is the standard for a communications audit for schools. They’ve done them for school districts all across the country.”

Stier noted that while the survey is anonymous, it does ask if respondents are students, parents or community members, with different lines of questioning tailored to each demographic.

Following the survey, NSPRA will conduct focus group meetings to discuss district communications with stakeholders in March. For more information about joining a focus group, email communications@grps.org.

The survey results and focus group data will be reviewed by NSPRA and compiled into a strategic plan for the district to reference going forward.
