Cal Community Center to open with ribbon-cutting, weekend celebration

Caledonia — The Cal Community Center is set to open Feb. 27, after almost five years of planning, design and construction.

Community members are invited to join Caledonia Community Schools staff and students for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. Thursday, followed by an open house from 5-7 p.m.

The public also is invited to watch the “First Splash” at 5:30 p.m. in the competition and leisure pools, when Caledonia High School swimmers will jump in alongside invited elementary students and senior citizens.

The 47,000-square-foot facility located at 9757 Kraft Ave. SE will operate in partnership with the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids. It includes a splash pad, fitness and wellness area, basketball court, indoor track and the Caledonia Resource Center, offering programs for families, students, and senior citizens.

During its opening weekend celebration, the center will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, for the community to explore the facility, learn about available programs and sign up for YMCA memberships. Beginning Monday, March 3, a membership will be required for access to YMCA programming.

Now through March 31, the YMCA is also waiving its membership joining fee.

“The Cal Community Center is a testament to what we can achieve as a community,” Superintendent Dirk Weeldreyer said. “This facility is more than just a building — it’s a place where our students, families, and residents can connect, grow, and thrive together.”

Construction of the center was made possible by a $88.09 million bond passed in May 2020 and the partnership with the YMCA.
