Into the wild: young adventurers test survival skills

Students use resources in nature as they learn about survival

Lowell — If you had to survive in the wilderness, could you? That was the question on Alto Elementary School students’ minds as they built fires and shelter, used a compass and snowshoed.

After reading the novel “Hatchet,” the fifth-graders tested their own winter survival skills at the Wittenbach Wege Agriscience & Environmental Education Center.

The snowy adventure helped students make connections to what they read in class by learning about resources in the wilderness needed for survival. Our videographer was there to capture it all.

Explore more unique video stories of students learning, interesting school programs and educators working to help all children succeed.
