District seeks input by April 3 on potential November bond proposal

Byron Center — Byron Center district leadership is discussing the possibility of a November bond proposal to enhance facilities and meet students’ needs.

Input on priorities is being sought through a survey for improving academics, fine arts and athletic programs for students and staff. The survey will close on April 3.

In an informational video, Superintendent Kevin Macina said the district plans to host a community forum in April for feedback and discussion, before the Board of Education votes to approve the final proposal in May.

Macina also highlighted the main three focus areas for future bond funds: academics, operational investments and athletics & fine arts.

Potential bond funds would expand the Early Childhood Center to add more classrooms and meet enrollment needs, as well as expand the North Star Academy and STEM classrooms at the high school.

Marshal and Countryside elementary schools and West Middle School would all receive full building renovations, including a redesign and expansion of the fine arts rehearsal and instrument storage space at West and BCHS.

The district is also considering plans to replace HVAC and plumbing in older buildings; build a new transportation center; update technology and parking lots; and for a new sports stadium, baseball and softball fields at the West athletic complex.

“If you have ever been to a Byron Center football game on a Friday night, you know the stadium gets crowded quickly,” Macina said in the video. “We need a bigger space, and are looking to build a new athletic stadium at the West Middle School complex.”

He added: “This is not a final proposal, but a chance to present to the community what we have found are some important needs that Byron Center is facing and how we can address those needs to best serve our kids.”
