Screeeeech! Two heavy retail display cases make their presence known as high school teachers move them across one end of a room to the other for cleaning and a new paint job.
They’re part of a small team of 11 teachers and a school community volunteer busy with a flurry of activity to launch a new “first” for the school district.
The cases display Godwin Heights school merchandise including Godwin clothing, key chains, lanyards, water bottles and other Godwin-themed products. These are sold at the School Spirit Store, said Marcia Davis, a special education teacher whose department oversees the operation of the store.
“We’re excited about it,” said Davis. “The art department is working with some students to paint signage for the store.”
Profits from the Spirit Store go to an account to underwrite merchandise students can purchase with Godwin Bucks at a section of the store called the Wolverine Den, adjacent to the school cafeteria.
The Wolverine Den is an integral part of a program the high school launched in the 2012-13 school year called Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS).Â
Students earn Godwin Bucks through a handful of incentive programs as a reward for exhibiting positive behavior, which makes for a safe, positive school environment. It’s also making a conspicuous improvement with students’ ability to learn, said Davis.
The plan has the School Spirit Store open Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:40-5 p.m. and during special events held in the auditorium. Parents, alumni, staff, students, and the school community are encouraged to stop in, browse and make purchases.
